3 more children die at MMCH with measles-like symptoms

Three more children have died in the isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) with measles-like symptoms, bringing the total number of child deaths there to 20. In the last 24 hours, 32 more children were admitted, while a total of 74 children are currently undergoing treatment.

This information was confirmed on Tuesday (April 28) morning by Associate Professor Dr Md Golam Mawla, focal person of the hospital’s measles medical team.

He said that on April 22 at around 6:00 pm, a 7-month-old baby boy from Gouripur in Mymensingh was admitted to the hospital with measles symptoms and pneumonia. The child died on Monday (April 27) at around 5:30 pm due to measles, pneumonia, and heart failure.

On April 23 at around 11:00 pm, a 4-month-old baby girl from Madanpur in Netrokona was admitted with measles symptoms and pneumonia. The child died on Monday evening at around 6:00 pm from measles, pneumonia, and heart failure.

On April 20 at around 7:00 pm, a 5-month-old baby boy from Durgapur in Netrokona was admitted with measles symptoms and pneumonia. He died on Sunday night at around 10:30 pm.

Hospital authorities said that from March 17 to April 28 morning, a total of 925 children have been admitted with measles-like symptoms. In the last 24 hours, 36 children recovered and were discharged from the hospital.

So far, a total of 831 children have been discharged. In the last 24 hours, one child was referred to Dhaka Shishu Hospital.

Assistant Director (Administration) of the hospital, Dr Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, said that from February this year, one or two patients with measles-like symptoms began to be admitted. However, from mid-March, the number of admissions started increasing.

Three medical teams have been formed, and treatment activities are being conducted in the measles isolation ward on the 8th floor of the hospital’s new building.
