Heavy rainfall disrupts power supply in Bandarban, travel restricted
  7, July, 2026, 10:21:51:AM

Electricity supply to Bandarban has been suspended after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall knocked down a 33kV power pole along the Keranihat-Bandarban road, according to the Power Division.

Meanwhile, the district administration has imposed a travel ban on all tourist spots till July 10 due to persistent heavy rainfall and the risk of weather-related incidents.

The restriction also prohibits tourists, tour operators and the general public from visiting waterfalls, mountain trails, riverine areas, remote locations and other high-risk sites across the district.

In an emergency notice published on Monday night on the verified Facebook page of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the department confirmed that the disruption was caused by a landslide resulting from continuous heavy rainfall.

According to the statement, technical teams have already begun repair work, and electricity service will be restored as soon as maintenance is completed.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that the seasonal low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal has moved west-northwest and is currently located over the Indian states of Jharkhand and Odisha. The system is expected to continue moving in a west-northwesterly direction.

The met office said the active southwest monsoon over Bangladesh, combined with stronger monsoon activity over the northern Bay of Bengal, has created favorable conditions for widespread rainfall across the country, with heavy to very heavy downpours expected in some areas.

In its weather forecast for the 24-hour period beginning at 6PM on Monday, the BMD said that most areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, as well as many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions, are likely to experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
