Black rice farming raises hopes for crop diversification in B`baria
  21, October, 2026, 10:55:33:AM

(BSS) - Black rice cultivation on an experimental basis in Brahmanbaria has raised hopes for agricultural diversification and higher farm incomes, as a local farmer explores the potential of the specialty rice variety.

Simon Molla, a farmer from Birchandrapur village under Dakshin union of Akhaura upazila, has cultivated black rice on two bighas of land this season.

The crop has started producing dark-coloured panicles, attracting the attention of local residents and fellow farmers. If the experiment proves successful, Molla plans to expand cultivation next season.

"I have cultivated black rice on two bighas of land on an experimental basis. If the yield is satisfactory and I receive a fair price for the produce, I will expand cultivation to a larger area next season," he told BSS.

Molla, who has long been involved in conventional rice cultivation, became interested in black rice after watching videos about the variety on YouTube.

He collected seeds at Tk 500 per kilogram, prepared a seedbed and transplanted the seedlings after preparing the land. He has since been taking regular care of the crop, which has now reached the panicle formation stage.

The farmer expects a yield of 16 to 18 maunds of paddy per bigha. He said the actual prospects for expansion would depend on the harvest and the price he receives in the market.

Black rice, distinguished by its dark purple to nearly black grains, is considered a specialty rice variety with potential in the premium food market. It can be used to prepare steamed rice, rice pudding, khichuri and traditional cakes.

The variety contains anthocyanins, pigments responsible for its dark colour, as well as dietary fibre and minerals. Its nutritional profile has contributed to growing consumer interest in specialty rice.

Black rice generally sells at a higher price than conventional rice varieties. According to information cited locally, its market price ranges from Tk 250 to Tk 1,000, depending on the product and quality. However, the price range does not necessarily represent the farm-gate price received by growers.

For farmers, the commercial viability of black rice will depend on production costs, yield, market demand and access to reliable buyers.

Akhaura Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Masud Rana said black rice was being cultivated experimentally on a limited scale in the upazila.

"We are providing farmer Simon Molla with the necessary assistance to help ensure a good yield," he said.

Black rice is also being cultivated in different parts of Bangladesh, including Cumilla, Naogaon, Chattogram and Thakurgaon. Several varieties are reportedly grown in the country, although cultivation remains limited compared with conventional rice.

Experiences from these areas could help farmers in Brahmanbaria assess suitable cultivation practices, production costs and marketing opportunities.

The crop`s nutritional qualities have also drawn attention. Black rice contains anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties, while its dietary fibre can contribute to a balanced diet. However, claims that it prevents cancer, controls diabetes or eliminates the risk of cardiovascular diseases require scientific evidence and should not be treated as established medical benefits.

Molla`s initiative could provide a useful opportunity to assess whether black rice can become a commercially viable alternative for farmers in the district.

If the experimental crop produces a satisfactory yield and secures a reliable market, its cultivation could gradually expand, creating new opportunities for agricultural diversification and improved farm incomes in Brahmanbaria.
