| Former information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) president Hasanul Haq Inu has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking acquittal from the 10-year prison sentence imposed by the International Crimes Tribunal in a crimes against humanity case.
The appeal was filed with the relevant section of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, October 14, Inu’s defence lawyer Barrister Md Sifat Mahmud confirmed.
On June 30, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Inu to 10 years in prison on each of three separate charges, directing that the sentences run concurrently. As a result, his total prison term stands at 10 years.
The charges stem from allegations of command responsibility, including alleged consultations with then prime minister Sheikh Hasina over suppressing the July–August mass uprising, and the killing of six people in Kushtia.
Police arrested Inu in Dhaka’s Uttara area on August 26, 2024. He is also facing trial in a separate crimes against humanity case over the Shapla Chattar crackdown.
Meanwhile, the prosecution has already appealed against the tribunal’s verdict, seeking the death penalty for Inu. While Inu is seeking acquittal, the prosecution is pursuing the maximum punishment in its appeal against the same verdict.
