Online Desk: A protest has been scheduled at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on September 29 against whatorganisers describe as injustices affecting democratic and secular values in India.
According to reports, the protest has been organised by the Monitoring Committee for Indian Muslims and will be held from 2pm to 5pm. The organisers are expected to raise concerns over the demolition of religious sites and exclusion of opposition supporters and Muslims from voter lists.
The planned demonstration comes amid a wider political debate over electoral-roll revisions and concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the treatment of minority communities and religious places. Claims regarding voter-list deletions and demolitions remain matters of political contention and have been made by opposition figures.
Meanwhile, IIOJK-based Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to “secular-minded” people to participate in the September 29 protest. In a video message posted on X, she said that mosques, shrines and churches were being demolished and that the names of opposition supporters, secular-minded people and particularly Muslims were being removed from voter lists. She urged people to join the protest to help protect democracy, brotherhood and the country’s “Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb” or composite culture.
