Xi Jinping-Ukhnagiin Khurelsukh Meeting in Bishkek: China and Mongolia Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Relations
  2, September, 2026, 9:33:44:AM

International: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh in Bishkek on the afternoon of August 31, local time, while attending the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

President Xi Jinping said that China and Mongolia are neighboring countries linked by mountains and rivers. Peaceful coexistence, mutual assistance and mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation have always been the mainstream and foundation of relations between the two countries. China will continue to place its relations with Mongolia in an important position in its neighborhood diplomacy and work with Mongolia to consolidate strategic mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people ties, inject new vitality into the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, and advance the building of a China-Mongolia community with a shared future.

President Xi Jinping stressed that both sides should consolidate the political foundation for the development of China-Mongolia relations, respect each other’s national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns.

China is willing to strengthen coordination between its development strategies and those of Mongolia, advance traditional cooperation in areas such as trade, connectivity, energy and mineral resources, and unlock the potential for cooperation in emerging fields such as green minerals, artificial intelligence and the digital economy. Through these efforts, China seeks to generate greater momentum for mutually beneficial cooperation and move forward together with Mongolia on their respective paths toward modernization, President Xi said.

President Xi Jinping expressed hope that Mongolia would effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese-invested enterprises. He also noted that the two sides should strengthen multilateral coordination and cooperation and work together to address global challenges.

President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh said that Mongolia and China are friendly neighbors. Regardless of how the international situation changes, the two countries have always maintained mutual respect, mutual trust and good-neighborly relations. China’s development creates important opportunities for neighboring countries and provides leadership for development in Asia and the wider world.

Deepening friendly cooperation with China is a primary direction of Mongolia’s foreign policy. Mongolia is willing to continuously consolidate political mutual trust with China, strengthen cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, industry, agriculture, minerals and the green economy, and elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

Mongolia firmly adheres to the one-China principle, recognizes that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and considers issues concerning Xinjiang, Xizang and Hong Kong to be China’s internal affairs.

Khurelsukh said that the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping, along with the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, are of great significance for safeguarding world peace and security, promoting sustainable development and addressing global challenges. Mongolia is willing to work with China to jointly implement these initiatives, he added.

Chinese officials Cai Qi, Wang Yi and others attended the meeting.
