Gayeshwar emphasizes following the existing constitution
  16, August, 2026, 7:02:35:PM

(BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy today said that BNP must proceed in accordance with the constitution to overcome any problem in running state affairs.

"We must move forward according to our existing constitution. Where there are obstacles, we must amend the constitution through the National Parliament to overcome those obstacles,” he said while responding to journalists’ questions after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin during the scrutiny of nomination papers for the presidential election at the Election Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon.

Earlier, a delegation led by BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan met with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on behalf of the party. Chief Whip of the National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam was present on this occasion.

After the meeting with the CEC, Gayeshwar said, "I am pleased to inform you that our candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been declared a valid candidate for the 23rd presidential election of Bangladesh."

"Now we will wait for the election on August 20,” he added.

In response to a question from journalists regarding Article 70 of the constitution, he said, "This question is irrelevant before the presidential election. There is no point in creating confusion."

In response to another question about constitutional amendment, he replied, "That is a later chapter or matter. If the parliament considers it collectively, it could happen."

Earlier, a delegation representing the 11-party alliance candidate Bir Bikram Oli Ahmed met with the CEC. After the meeting, they informed that the nomination paper of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed had been accepted as valid.

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the presidential election began today at 11:00 AM.
Election Commission Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed informed that the last time for withdrawal of candidacy in the presidential election is until 4:00 PM on August 18 (Tuesday). Voting will be held on August 20 (Thursday) from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the session hall of the National Parliament.
