Manchester United beat Brentford to climb third in Premier League
  28, April, 2026, 11:59:0:AM

Manchester United boosted their hopes of securing a Champions League place with a controlled 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Monday.

The win moves United into third place, putting them three points ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa as they edge closer to a return to European competition next season.

Midfielder Casemiro opened the scoring early, rising at the far post to head home in the 11th minute. It marked his 11th headed goal for the club since joining in 2022, placing him among the league’s top performers in that category alongside Erling Haaland, Ollie Watkins and Chris Wood.

Brentford responded well and matched United for much of an entertaining first half, but the hosts doubled their lead just before the interval.

Benjamin Sesko finished off a quick counterattack after a precise pass from Bruno Fernandes, who notched his 19th assist of the season; the highest in the league.

After the match, Sesko praised Fernandes, pointing to their strong understanding developed in training and the midfielder’s creativity.

Despite a spirited performance, Brentford struggled to make their chances count. Mathias Jensen pulled one back in the 87th minute, but it proved too late to change the outcome.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews expressed disappointment with the result but commended his team’s effort, saying they had played bravely against a strong opponent.

The defeat leaves Brentford in ninth place, level on points with Chelsea and Fulham. Despite a winless run in the league since February, their hopes of qualifying for European competition remain intact.
