UK assures support to develop Bangladesh as a regional aviation hub
  24, March, 2026, 8:12:52:PM

Kamrul Hasan : A high-level meeting was held between top policymakers of the government and the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh as part of efforts to strengthen international cooperation aimed at modernizing and making Bangladesh’s civil aviation sector more competitive.

The courtesy meeting took place on Tuesday (March 24) at the conference room of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The meeting was attended by the Hon’ble Minister of the Ministry, Afroz Khanam Rita, MP, and State Minister Md. Rashiduzzaman Millat. On behalf of the United Kingdom, the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on further deepening and broadening the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries. In particular, fruitful discussions were held on trade, investment, infrastructure development, and the potential for joint initiatives in the civil aviation sector. According to stakeholders, the implementation of such initiatives could further strengthen Bangladesh’s strategic position in the global economic landscape.

The Bangladesh side sought technical and managerial support from the United Kingdom for the development of its rapidly growing aviation sector. In response, High Commissioner Sarah Cooke assured continued UK cooperation in Bangladesh’s ongoing development activities.

Special attention was given to the Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The High Commissioner highlighted the UK’s interest in ground handling operations at the terminal, which, if implemented, could open new horizons in ensuring international-standard services.

According to analysts, as Bangladesh advances toward its goal of becoming a regional aviation hub, engagement from developed countries like the United Kingdom will further accelerate the process. In the context of increasing competition in the aviation sector in South Asia, such cooperation could provide Bangladesh with significant strategic advantages.

Observers view the meeting not merely as a diplomatic courtesy exchange, but as a signal of a broader economic and infrastructural partnership. In the post-Brexit era, the United Kingdom is seeking new markets and partners, while Bangladesh, as a fast-growing economy, is eager to capitalize on such opportunities.

Overall, the meeting is considered an important step toward elevating bilateral relations between the two countries to a new height, while also advancing the modernization and internationalization of Bangladesh’s aviation sector.
