Identities of 12 killed in train-bus collision in Cumilla revealed

(BSS) - The identities of those killed in a train-bus collision in the district sadar have been confirmed.

A total of 12 people, including two children from the same family, were killed in the incident. Among the deceased are 7 men, 2 women, and 3 girl children.

The deceased are: Md. Babul Chowdhury, 53, son of Salamat Ullah of Sonaimuri in Noakhali; Laiju Akter ,26, wife of Pintu Mia of Maheshpur in Jhenaidah, along with her two daughters Khadija Akter, 6 and Mariam Akter, 4; Sohel Rana, 46, son of Billal Hossain of Jibannagar in Chuadanga; Md. Sirajul Islam, 62, son of Fakir Chand Biswas of Chaugachha in Jashore, and his wife Kohinur Begum, 55, Nazrul Islam Raihan, 33, son of Md. Selim Mia of Sudharam in Noakhali; Sayeda, 9, daughter of Sirajul Doula of Lakshmipur Sadar; Md. Jowad Biswas, 20, son of Moktar Hossain Biswas of Jhenaidah Sadar; Fosiar Rahman, 26, son of Wahab Sheikh of Mohammadpur in Magura; and Tajul Islam, 68, son of Mominul Haque of Kachua in Chandpur.

According to police and Fire Service sources, the accident occurred around 3:00 am on Sunday under the Paduar Bazar Bishwa Road flyover in the Jangalya area of Cumilla Sadar Dakshin upazila.

The Chattogram-bound Chattogram Mail train was passing through the Paduar Bazar Bishwa Road area when a passenger bus was crossing the railway track. The Mamun Paribahan bus was traveling from Chapainawabganj to Noakhali. At that moment, the speeding train rammed into the bus causing it to get stuck with the train engine.

Eyewitnesses said the train dragged the bus for nearly one kilometer after the collision.

The bus was completely mangled, and several passengers died on the spot. Locals and Fire Service personnel rescued the seriously injured and rushed them to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
