Govt to shield economy from Middle East turmoil says Finance Minister
  22, March, 2026, 10:07:10:PM

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the government is taking active steps to protect country’s economy from the fallout of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and mounting global pressures.

Speaking to reporters after exchanging Eid greetings with political leaders and activists at his residence in Mehedibagh, Chattogram on Sunday, the minister outlined measures aimed at maintaining economic stability during a volatile period.

He said the government has prioritized securing fuel supplies, containing transport costs, and stabilizing essential commodity prices to ease the burden on ordinary citizens.

According to Chowdhury, authorities have arranged alternative fuel import sources to reduce strain on the supply chain caused by the war. As a result, transport services continued without disruption during the Eid holidays, and fares did not increase despite global uncertainties.

He added that efforts are ongoing to maintain this stability in the coming months.

The minister acknowledged, however, that Bangladesh cannot remain entirely insulated from the broader consequences of a prolonged conflict.

He noted that sourcing fuel and ensuring a steady supply remain significant challenges, warning that continued instability abroad could intensify economic pressure at home.

He called on citizens to demonstrate patience, unity, and cooperation as the country navigates the global crisis. Remaining calm and working together, he said, will be essential to overcoming the challenges ahead.

Chowdhury, a BNP Standing Committee member, also observed that this year’s Eid was celebrated in a festive and secure atmosphere, which he attributed to a renewed sense of confidence among the public.

He expressed optimism about the nation’s trajectory and encouraged people to stay hopeful.

Highlighting labor conditions, he said the garment sector experienced no unrest ahead of Eid, as workers received advance payments of salaries and allowances before Ramadan and the holiday period. He described this as a marked improvement compared to previous years.

The minister further pointed to several welfare initiatives introduced by the government, including family and farmer support cards, agricultural loan waivers, and allowances for religious leaders.

He said these measures reflect the administration’s broader commitment to supporting vulnerable groups during uncertain economic times.

Reiterating his message, Chowdhury urged national unity and collective resilience to withstand the ripple effects of global instability.
