Low-lying areas in Charfassion submerged
  25, July, 2025, 10:14:13:PM

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has caused flooding in the low-lying areas of Charfassion Upazila in Bhola.Digital newspaper subscription

Fields, crops, fish farms, ponds, and rural roads have been submerged, severely disrupting daily life and making movement difficult. Many residents remain confined to their homes, struggling to cope with the situation.

On Friday (July 25), visits to several areas including Charmanika, Rasulpur, Jahanpur, Hazariganj, Madrasa, and Nazrul Nagar unions revealed widespread flooding.

Additionally, rising tidal waters have inundated houses and roads in parts of Charkukri-Mukri, Chalchar, and Mujib Nagar unions. Hundreds of families are trapped by floodwaters, causing severe hardship—particularly for working-class and laboring residents.

Monir, a resident of Dhalchar union, said, “There is no embankment protecting our char. Our situation is extremely vulnerable. Many homes have been flooded by tidal waters. Without any shelters, we live in constant fear. We manage during the day, but at night it’s very stressful.”

Siddiq, from Ward 5 in Charmanika union, said, “The Meghna River’s water has flooded my home and roads, making movement difficult. We haven’t been able to cook lunch yet due to the flooding. Once the tide goes down, we will prepare food. My family is facing great hardship.”

Asfauddoula, Executive Engineer of Charfassion Water Development Board-2, stated, “The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has raised river water levels, flooding low-lying areas in Charfassion. This condition may continue until July 28. However, water levels have not crossed the danger mark anywhere. We are closely monitoring the situation 24/7.”

At the time of reporting, Charfassion remains cloudy with light to moderate rain and gusty winds.
