Opposing Separatist Activities in Taiwan Is in the Common Interests of China and the United States
  01-10-2026

International : There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. Adhering to the One-China principle is a fundamental norm of international relations and enjoys broad consensus in the international community. It is also a political foundation of China-US relations, said Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council, at a regular press conference on September 30.

He said the Taiwan question lies at the heart of China’s core interests and is the most important issue in China-US relations. If the issue is handled properly, the overall stability of bilateral relations can be maintained. Otherwise, confrontation or even conflict could arise between the two countries, potentially pushing China-US relations into an extremely dangerous situation.

Zhang Han said the administration of Lai Ching-te has stubbornly maintained its separatist position of “Taiwan independence” and refused to recognize the “1992 Consensus,” which embodies the One-China principle. He added that the administration has continued to provoke calls for “independence.” In China’s view, these actions undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

He said firmly opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism and safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are consistent with the common interests of both China and the United States.

Zhang Han said China hopes that Taiwan residents will recognize the harm and risks associated with the Lai Ching-te administration’s pursuit of “independence” and firmly oppose so-called independence and separatist activities.

He added that China is willing to work together with Taiwan residents to firmly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and advance the cause of national reunification.
