Three people, including two children, drowned in the Kumar River in Faridpur Sadar Upazila on Thursday.
The incident occurred around noon at Chowdhury Bazar of Pashchim Bhasan Char under Ambikapur union in the upazila.
According to locals, the dead children, Sowad, 6, and Tousif, 7, drowned while bathing in the Kumar River near their home. Their grandmother, 70, who went to rescue them, also went missing along with them. Tousif and Sowad were students of first and second grade respectively at Bhasan Char Primary School.
The disappearance of the children was initially unnoticed. Around 5:30 pm, locals spotted two bodies floating in the river and informed fire service. Upon recovery, their identities were confirmed.
Faridpur Fire Service Station Officer Mohammad Nisar Ali said they got information around 4:45 pm about two bodies floating in the river. They recovered the bodies by 6 pm and identified them. Another child remains missing. Due to darkness, the rescue operation was suspended after searching for some time.
