A schoolgirl has drowned while learning to swim with her sister at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 3 PM at a wetland near her home in Doilerbagh area of the upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Israt Jahan Rubaiya, 14, daughter of Aktar Hossain, a resident of the same area. She was a seventh-grade student at Sonargaon Pilot Girls` High School.

According to locals, Rubaiya went to the nearby wetland with her elder sister, Eva Aktar, to learn how to swim when she went missing.

Later, her sister, with the help of other family members, started searching for her and after an extensive search, her body was recovered around 3:45 PM.

Eva said that her sister had a dream of joining the army. She wanted to be proficient in all aspects to fulfil her dream, so she was trying to learn to swim.
