EC prepares for holding polls in February: CEC
  6, August, 2025, 9:43:57:PM

Despite various challenges, the Election Commission is making comprehensive preparations to hold elections in February, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said.

Speaking at a press conference at his office in Nirbachan Bhaban on Wednesday, August 6, CEC Nasir Uddin stated that the Commission is ready to conduct the polls, even as it navigates certain logistical and administrative hurdles.

“The EC is prepared,” he said. “Once we receive the formal letter from the Chief Adviser, we will finalise the election schedule and announce it a couple of months before the polling date, following necessary consultations.”

He expressed hope that the letter would arrive soon, but added that the Commission is proceeding with preparations regardless. “Even if we don’t receive it immediately, we are moving forward with our plans. Although there are various challenges in holding the February elections, our preparations are on track.”

Emphasising the need for fairness, the CEC said the Commission is striving to ensure a level playing field. “Political parties should refrain from engaging in any underhand tactics,” he urged. “Our goal is to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.”

Nasir Uddin also highlighted emerging challenges, including the potential misuse of artificial intelligence in the upcoming elections. “Preventing the misuse of AI will be a significant challenge,” he noted. “There are also concerns about voter turnout at polling centres. Nevertheless, we are committed to creating a smooth and orderly environment –let the elections be conducted in a festive and peaceful atmosphere.”

When asked whether the Awami League would be allowed to participate, the CEC clarified: “The activities of the Awami League are currently suspended, and legal proceedings are ongoing. A decision regarding the party’s status will be made following the conclusion of the trial.” However, he confirmed that supporters of the Awami League will be eligible to vote as individual citizens.
