ITIIU traces Tk 1,874cr tax evasion in seven months
  14, July, 2025, 11:50:31:PM

The Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit (ITIIU), launched by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in December 2024, has uncovered tax evasion totalling Tk 1,874 crore in its first seven months.

Investigating 183 individuals and organizations, the unit has already recovered Tk 117.43 crore from 63 cases through 231 A-challans, depositing the funds into the state treasury, NBR officials announced this week.

Despite limited manpower and logistical constraints as a nascent entity, the ITIIU has made remarkable strides. “The unit’s relentless efforts have yielded significant success in detecting tax evasion and recovering lost revenue,” an NBR official said.

The ITIIU’s intelligence-driven operations have led to the temporary freezing of over 100 bank accounts linked to confirmed tax evasion, sending a strong message to evaders and money launderers.

The ITIIU is not only focused on enforcement but also on encouraging voluntary tax compliance. By targeting tax evasion and undisclosed wealth under existing laws, the unit aims to create a fair and transparent revenue system. “Our goal is to ensure legal and equitable tax collection while deterring illicit financial activities,” an official said.

The ITIIU’s early achievements signal its potential to transform Bangladesh’s revenue landscape. By recovering substantial funds and promoting taxpayer accountability, the unit is fostering a robust tax culture. The NBR highlights that the ITIIU’s growing expertise, reliance on technology, and skilled workforce will strengthen the nation’s revenue framework, reduce economic inequality, and drive sustainable development.

The NBR views the ITIIU as a cornerstone of economic reform, emphasizing fairness and accountability. “The unit’s success in just seven months proves its capacity to enhance compliance and build a resilient economy,” an NBR spokesperson said. As the ITIIU expands its capabilities, it is poised to play a pivotal role in securing Bangladesh’s financial future through effective revenue governance.
